Balancing Blood Sugar During the Cold Season

As the days grow shorter and the light fades, the lure of cosy blankets and comfort food becomes hard to resist. It’s a perfect storm for our hormones — but don’t worry, we’ve got the best tips to help you balance your blood sugar this winter.

Why Balancing Blood Sugar Matters

  • Hormonal balance: Stable blood sugar helps avoid hormonal swings, especially during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, or menopause.

  • Hunger and cravings: Sugar highs and crashes trigger sudden cravings and lead to snacking.

  • Weight and wellbeing: When blood sugar is steady, the body stores less fat, making weight management easier.

  • Stress: Fluctuating glucose levels stimulate cortisol — the alertness and stress hormone. Over time, this can tire the body, affect mood, and fuel sugar cravings, creating a vicious cycle.

Detox Broth — Your Winter Blood Sugar Ally

Convenient, quick and delicious, our new Detox Broth — a fragrant vegetable and herb infusion — is your perfect companion throughout the day. Sip it warm between meals, alongside lunch, or whenever you feel peckish. You can also use it in soothing dishes like our quick vegetable and soba bowl below.

Why Broth Helps Balance Blood Sugar

  • It slows sugar absorption: The soluble fibres from the vegetables (even partially released into the broth) help slow carbohydrate absorption, preventing sharp spikes.

  • Low in calories, rich in nutrients: It keeps you satisfied without feeling heavy — a natural way to reduce sugar cravings.

  • Mineral support: Potassium and magnesium from the broth’s vegetables improve insulin sensitivity and promote steadier blood sugar.

  • Hydration: Staying hydrated is key to healthy sugar metabolism — and what better way than with a nourishing, warming broth on a cold day?

Quick Recipe: Vegetable & Soba Broth Bowl

Ingredients

  • Buckwheat soba noodles – rich in protein, gluten-free, and low glycaemic.

  • Seaweed (wakame or a mix in flakes) – full of minerals, protein and iodine.

  • Pumpkin seeds – a source of essential fatty acids and anti-inflammatory omega-3s.

  • 1 tsp white miso paste – supports digestion, contains natural probiotics, and helps regulate blood sugar.

  • 1 sachet of Detox Broth.

Instructions
Infuse the Detox Broth for about 10 minutes in 250 ml of boiling water. Pour over cooked soba noodles.
Stir in one teaspoon of white miso.
For texture, add pumpkin seeds and sprinkle with seaweed flakes, gomasio (sesame–salt blend), pepper and a hint of grated ginger.
Enjoy warm and comforting!

Optional extras: Add cubes of smoked tofu or a poached egg for extra protein.

The Blood Sugar–Friendly Checklist

  • Always combine carbs + protein + fats: Pair fruit with healthy fats (like almonds or walnuts). Include protein at every meal or snack — for instance, an apple with yoghurt keeps your energy steady longer.

  • Don’t skip breakfast: A well-balanced one sets the tone for balanced blood sugar all day.

  • Prioritise fresh fibres: Plenty of fruit and vegetables slow sugar absorption.

  • Choose plant-based milks: Almond, cashew, or coconut milk (unsweetened, ideally homemade) help keep blood sugar stable.

  • Stay hydrated: Even in winter, hydration helps flush out sugar and toxins while supporting metabolism.

  • Move after meals: A light walk after eating helps your body process glucose efficiently.

  • Have an early dinner: It supports better blood sugar balance and overall health.
