What is collagen?
It is a structural protein in the human body: our skin, hair, and bones are composed of collagen. It represents 25 to 30% of the proteins in our body.
Collagen contains specific amino acids: glycine, proline, hydroxyproline and arginine.
What is the purpose of collagen?
The word “collagen” comes from “glue”; it is the protein that keeps our skin, tissues, and cartilage firm, dense, and healthy! Rich in glycine, it also contributes to the proper functioning of digestion and the brain.
Where can collagen be found?
Our body produces collagen (the “best” collagen there is). It produces it intensely until the age of 25 (when we grow, the need for collagen is very high). Collagen production begins to decline by 1% from the age of 25 and drops sharply after 45. Between the ages of 45 and 50, it is estimated that we lose 30% of our body's collagen content.
Consequences : a more fragile body, less firm skin, less dense bones, thinner hair. Since the skin is the largest and most visible organ, the impact of decreased collagen on the skin is very strong: thinner skin, wrinkles, hollow cheeks...
How to compensate for the decrease in collagen production?
Three compatible and highly recommended options:
1- Naturally boost your collagen production
- Let's embrace beauty food! The best plate for boosting collagen: load up on foods rich in sulfur (like cruciferous vegetables, garlic, and eggs) and silicon (whole grains, lentils). And load up on vitamin C (green vegetables, fruits, berries). The best part? Incorporate a tablespoon of... We want a doll-like complexion 100% plant-based supplement; berries (rich in silicon and vitamin C) in your smoothie or yogurt every morning.
- Also, make sure to hydrate your skin , from the inside: drink plenty of pure water and favour foods naturally rich in good fats such as oilseeds, small oily fish and avocado) and on the outside with pure cosmetics such as plum oil or olive squalane.
- Massage your skin well with your fingers and/or gua sha to stimulate collagen production.
Warning : there is no point in using creams containing collagen because this molecule is too large to pass through the epidermal barrier.
2- Take collagen supplements
There are many collagen supplement products available, so be careful to choose them wisely.
- Pay attention to the origin of the collagen. It only exists in the animal kingdom, so it is extracted from animal bones or cartilage.
- Questioning the method of extracting collagen from bones. Industrial extraction uses numerous chemicals and processes involving heating and dehydration.
- The most natural way to supplement your collagen intake is to drink Bone Broth, a collagen broth handcrafted from free-range chicken bones, simmered for hours. Thanks to the expertise of our master broth maker, each serving of Bone Broth contains over 10g of collagen (in addition to being delicious!). 100% of our Bone Broth customers tell us so. The day after drinking Bone Broth, skin appears lifted. It's no secret: those 10g of collagen make skin glow. For more information on Bone Broth, read this article.
3- The perfect match: Vitamin C + collagen
Vitamin C is essential for hydroxylation , one of the steps in collagen biosynthesis in the body. To maximize its natural production and the benefits of external collagen supplementation, we increase our vitamin C intake. We rely on natural supplements enriched with vitamin C, such as those designed for a flawless complexion .
Drinkable collagen or collagen cream?
Applying collagen cream is much less effective because its molecular weight is too high to penetrate the dermis. Ideally, collagen should be taken orally as a course of treatment every two months.
How often should I take drinkable collagen supplements?
The best :
- 12 bone broths (12 days) every two months (collagen lives in the dermis for 2 months), to be used in conjunction with the supplement "We want ultimate radiance" (hydrates the skin and activates the glow!).
